Learn how a water softener can improve your way of living!Water softeners are designed to remove hard mineral content from your water supply. Mineral ions like magnesium, calcium, and iron can cause several types of problems for a home and those who live there. The most common issue with having high mineral content in your tap water is scale. Scale is hardened sediment that accumulates overtime, disrupting everything from plumbing pipes and water-related appliances, to our laundry, glassware, skin, hair, and more. As for the taste of your water, hard mineral ions cause a metallic taste, or sometimes a stale taste.
For this reason, many people wonder if installing a water conditioner will improve the taste of tap water. Continue reading to learn how a water softener can do just that!
How It Works
Traditional water softeners use a technological process called ion exchange to remove hard mineral content. Here’s how it works: Water softeners come with two tanks, a brine tank that holds the salt pellets, and the mineral tanks that houses the ion exchange process. The mineral tank contains polystyrene beads called resin beads (or sometimes zeolite), which carry a negative charge. Hard minerals like iron and calcium hold a positive charge. During the ion exchange process, the negatively-charged resin beads attract the positively-charged hard mineral ions as they pass through, thus eliminating them from the water supply before they reach the faucet or water line. Afterwards, the brine tank flushes the ion-soaked resin beads, trading the hard mineral ions for softer ones, usually sodium.
Benefits of Soft Water
With hard mineral ions removed, water is clearer, tastier, and even healthier to drink. But your tap water is not the only area that benefits from conditioned water. Your plumbing pipes are protected against excess sediment buildup, which can cause costly damages in water heaters, washing machines, water lines, and more. Furthermore, conditioned water makes bathing easier by proving sudsy soap lathers and complete rinses. Hair is free of dinge and residue, while laundry is softer and smells better.
